December 2009 Edition

     Phyllis Harrison
President: Club news from January '09 to the present

The Chicken Shoots are going to be starting shortly.  I would like to invite as many of you to come and give it a try if you have never been to one.  There are members at the shoots that are very knowledgeable and willing to discuss with other members the sport of shooting.
We are planning on having our annual Kids Fishing Derby with the Town of Stillwater, provided the weather does not interfere.
This last year, we had a Pig Roast in August and the morning of the roast we had a 2nd fishing derby.  While we had a nice turnout, it would be nice to see more members there.  What a great time we all had.  Gary Milller and his crew did a fantastic job getting things set up and taking care of the Pig Roast.  I am looking forward to what he has in store for this coming year.
A couple of years ago, I announced that we would charge a fee of $50 for events if members wish to hold one at the picnic grounds.  PLEASE remember that the club depends on members to tend and care for the grounds. If you have an event planned, YOU are responsible for the appearance of the grounds.  If you want to get checked out on the club's equipment, contact me and I will arrange someone to meet with you and go over how to operate the equipment.  Keep in mind that the picnic area is still open to Club members, even though there may be a private party going on.

Remember to use our website Stillwaterrodandgun.org re: events at the club, etc. We are trying to use the internet to save money and keep the membership up to date as much as possible.

I hope that this newsletter finds all of the members in good shape and you have had a fine year. This year, the Board of Directors discussed the dues and it was decided to raise the dues this year to $50.  Many of you have been at the meetings or have seen the notice on the website. It is my intent and hope that I have the newsletter out prior to the renewal of your memberships.  There are some of you that have already renewed your membership.  If you have renewed already, thank you.  If you haven't, I would like to remind you that your membership will expire on the 31st of December.  To renew your membership, please make out a check for $50.00 to the club and send it to the address on the newsletter.  You don't need to fill out another application if you were a member in the past 25 years, as I have the records on the computer.  If you want to trade in your old key for a '10 key, you may send the old one with your check.  If for some reason you don't have the old one or want another key, please send $2.00 for each additional key that you want.  When you leave the grounds, be sure to lock the gates.  If you see something askew, or are aware of something happening that isn't right, PLEASE call so that we can take care of it. Thanks.
I hope that all of you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

A few years ago, we were fortunate to have a member (Joe Goss) step forward and set up a website for the club. For anyone who has access to the internet, this has been an exciting site to get up-to-date information on the club.  The website is: Stillwaterrodandgun.org.  This has been a wonderful tool and a way to pass along information to the members.  I have noticed that many of the folks that renewed their dues already are using the website for their application.  I have also noticed a number of inquiries via e-mail and phone calls from people that have seen our website.  If you have anything you would like to share with the rest of the members, or have pictures of the club (both past and present) please contact Joe or myself and we will see that the information is placed on the website.  We are still trying to get information and pictures from the "early years". We would like to get pictures, stories, anything that anyone has so that we can have an accurate history of the club.  Please let me know what you are willing to share with the club so that we can create archives of the past.  Please remember to check the website for updates on the shoots, Training Courses and other events.

December 2007 Edition

Phyllis Harrison, President: Club News January To The Present

A Board meeting was held January 31, 2007, at which time a complete
financial report was given by Sec/Treas from 1991 to the present.
January also saw the club hold an Archery class.  It was decided a new
archery area will be established in part of the old baseball field on
the river side of the property.
April: The Club held a Hunter Education class run by Matt Rubino with
help from John Callahan and Chuck Painton.  A web site was established
this Spring by member Joe Goss. Our web site is Stillwaterrodandgun.org.
The Chicken Shoots went on as usual, and our annual Kids Fishing Derby
was June 3rd, with 10 youngsters attending, with hot dogs and burgers
for all.  Thanks to Bill Wood for grilling.  A huge thank you to all
members who dragged away the downed trees this year.  John Boyce and
two new members, Tim Melvis and Nick Sturgis.
The Picnic Grounds were used four times this summer for members
special parties, graduation, etc.  The Board as well as members at our
monthly meetings have tried quite a few ideas to raise money.  I tried
to organize a Craft Fair on the Picnic Grounds  with no response.  Our
efforts at a Bass Tournament were squelched by NY State ENCON.  It
became necessary to raise our dues last year, and it was just in time,
as our taxes have gone up.  Other area clubs are more than twice as
much as ours.  A Board meeting was held October 16th, and finance
discussed at length.  It was decided that he club would now charge a
fee of $50 for the events members which to hold at the picnic grounds.
Keep in mind that the picnic area is still open to Club members, even
though there maybe a private party going on.
PLEASE don't use the range building as a dump for your
unwanted items.  Over the summer a gigantic ceiling fan and an equally
large television have appeared.  We don't need either item!  please
come and take them away.
The Chicken Shoots will start January 5th and the last one will be
April 12th.  The group will gather between 10:00 -11:00 AM.
Competition starts at 12:00 Noon.  On the first Saturday of each month
I try to bring soup or chilli, the proceeeds go to the club.
Our Spring Hunter Safety Education course will be on the weekend of
April 26 and 27, 2008.  Be sure to contact Matt Rubino ahead of time to
reserve a spot for you or someone that is need of this
course.

We are fortunate this past year to have a member ( Joe Goss)
step forward and set up a web
site for the club. For anyone that has access to the internet, this is
an exciting site to get up to date
information on the club.  The web site is Stillwaterrodandgun.org..  At
first there will be limited information, though as it is used more and
there are more of us using the site there will be more for all of us to
use and access.  The Board of Directors has discussed using the web
site and having an electronic newsletter that comes out more often than
this annual newsletter.  We will continue to use this newsletter as our
"annual newsletter" and use quartley ones on the web site to keep the
members up to date.  As various events are announced we are able to
post them immediatley on the web site.  This allows you to have nearly
instant access to what events are coming up in the club without the
additional expense of printing and postage.  I encourage all the
members to access the site and utilize this new and exciting way to
know what is happening with our club.
I would like to call to everyones attention that this year we have
elections for four (4) members of theBoard of Directors.  This will be
occuring at the January meeting (weather permitting) and if not will be
held at the next meeting of the club.

I hope that this newsletter finds all of the members in good shape and you have had a fine year.  It is that time of the year and I would like to remind you that your membership will be up at the end of the year.  To renew your membership please make out a check for $40.00 to the club and send it to the address on the newsletter.  You don’t need to fill out another application if you were a member the past 25 years, as I have the records on the computer.  If you want to trade in your old key for a '07 key, you may send the old one with your check.  If for some reason you don’t have the old one or want another key, please send $1.00 for each additional key that you want.  The keys again this year will be changed the night of our annual meeting in January.  These keys will fit the rifle range, gateway to the picnic grounds and the bathrooms on the picnic grounds.  Please remember to lock any of these locks after you are done using the facilities.  As in the past, this year there were some problems with the locks not being locked and there was some vandalism that took place as a result of this. When you leave, be sure to lock that gates.  It was brought to my attention that the lock at the picnic grounds came apart this fall.  If you see something askew, or are aware of something happening that isn't right, PLEASE call so that we can take care of it.   Thanks.

     Phyllis Harrison
     President

I want to thank both Charboneau's as well as the others for the fine job they have done in keeping the grounds mowed this past year.  Matt Rubino headed up the Hunter Safety Training Class and once again did a fine job of it with assistance from some of the members of the club.  It is great having Matt head this up and offer this to the member's families and the public.  Thanks to Gary Miller for painting the Rifle range. it looks great.
After a couple of false starts, it looks like we are going to have the Chicken Shoots after all.  They will be on Saturdays starting at 12:00 Noon on Jan 6th and will be held for 10 weeks.  You don't need to be an expert shooter to take part, come up and see what it is about and get some hints and advice from the guys that are there.
We have a new sign to go up down at the river.  The posts broke off the other one there.  At the work day in the spring we will get the new one installed.  It looks like we will finally get rid of the dumpster that has taken up residence along the road to the picnic grounds.  It was brought in to take away debris and we have never been able to get the individual that dropped it off to come and pick it up.  I think we have someone who will take it off our hands and make the grounds look much better.
Next year we will be holding elections for  some members of the Board of Directors.   It would be nice to see some others step up and express some interest in serving in these positions.  If you have interest or wonder what it all takes, feel free to contact me or one of the other officers.  We will be more than glad to go over with you what the jobs entail and what is expected from members of the board.

Thanks.

Clarification Information For Newsletter

In the last newsletter and also posted on the Rod and Gun Club's website, for those of you who use computers, it was announced that the Board of Directors had approved the availability of Club grounds for use  by members only- for family gatherings or group celebrations. A fee of $50 will be charged for each group payable in advance to the club secretary/treasurer, Steve Hemstreet, telephone 753 4581. Please plan your use of the grounds long enough in advance to consider the following.

All maintenance work relative to grooming the grounds is done by a small dedicated group of volunteers. The club is grateful to them for their hours of labor dedicated to this cause. However, the club cannot control exactly when these people will donate time for this purpose, like the rest of us they have to prioritize time in their daily lives.

Therefore we cannot schedule them nor ask them to coordinate their efforts to be in continuity with each and every request for use of the grounds. If you are considering such use, it would be wise to ensure that its condition is appropriate for your planned event. You may luck out and find it so, then again, you may not!

If the latter is the case, you as a member of the club, may elect to donate time before the event to make it so. You may do this entirely on your own volition using your own equipment with which you are most familiar. Club owned equipment is operated only by people familiar with their mechanics. You are asked to be cognizant of the fact that if you opted to hold such a gathering on your own property you would incur the same responsibility to prepare your home grounds.

On the other hand the club grounds offer an appropriate setting for any type of gathering regardless of size and at a very affordable price. Your help and cooperation in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for visiting our web site!

Keep our club grounds clean. Carry in - Carry out.
